Bella Island

The Massimo Theater, an architectural complex consisting of niches and statues, crowned by the Liocorn of the Borromeo house, which in the past served as a side dish to the events of the noble family, opens access to the terraces, which lead to a panoramic point with a splendid view of Lake Maggiore. Before entering the garden, one crosses the no less important Palazzo, where, in April 1935, the Stresa conference was discussed: the representatives of the Italian, French and English governments (Mussolini, Laval and Mac Donald) gathered trying to guarantee the peace in Europe. Today, from March to October, the 25 rooms destined to the Museum of the Borromeo Palace can be visited with Specialized Tourist Guides and offer the tourist unforgettable moments and emotions and lead to the Italian garden defined as one of the finest examples of Baroque art applied to botany in Italy.

This formidable fortified construction is located in the southern area of ​​the lake, precisely on the limestone hill in the city of Angera, on the Lombard shore. The fortress belongs to the Borromeo family and its construction dates back to the 14th century. Together with the Rocca di Arona they were the main control points of the southern lake regarding the traffic that took place on the lake. Its predominant position also ensured the view of the Alps ensuring the control of any enemy invasions from beyond the Alps. Currently, the interior of the fortress can be visited, including the famous "Hall of Justice", one of the oldest and most important examples of Western Middle Ages painting. Among these stands out the Marquis Ludovico Pallavicino who from 1862 enlarged the estate, built carriage roads and adorned the park and the villa with statues. In 1956, almost a century later, the zoological garden was opened and even today visitors can walk among greenhouses, flowers, animals, statues and centuries-old trees.
